Road Test at Memorial Driving School

Who is Eligible to Test Here?
Teens
Are at least 16 years old
Have held a valid Texas learner license for at least 6 months
Have completed an approved Teen or Parent-Taught Driver Education course (DE-964)
Have completed the Impact Texas Teen Drivers (ITTD) video within the last 90 days

What is Third Party Road Testing?
The Third Party Skills Testing (TPST) program, established in 2014, allows qualified driver education schools to administer driving tests approved by the state. While we are not a DPS office, our licensed examiners can conduct your driving test and guide you through the process to help you successfully earn your license.

Teen Road Test Requirements

Valid Texas Learner License

Teens must be at least 16 years old and have held their Texas Learner License for a minimum of 6 months, or be 18 years of age. The exact 6-month eligibility date is listed on the back of the learner license, and the road test may be taken any time after that date.

Learner licenses generally expire on the student’s 18th birthday. If the license has expired, it must be renewed before the road test appointment.

A temporary paper permit is acceptable as long as it is still valid. The expiration date can be found above the photo on the temporary permit.

Driver’s Ed Final Certificate (DE-964)

The certificate must be marked “For Driver License Only,” and the transfer box must remain unchecked.

Impact Texas Teen Drivers Certificate (ITTD)

Vehicle for Road Test

Adult Road Test Requirements
For ages 18 and older:

Valid Texas Driver License (Restriction B)

Identification cards are not accepted.

A temporary paper permit may be used as long as it is still valid (the expiration date appears above the photo on the permit).

Proof of Completion of Adult Driver Education

A certificate showing completion of an Adult Driver Education course is required for applicants ages 18–24. It is not required for adults age 25 or older. Digital copies of the certificate are accepted.
If you are 18 or older but completed a Teen Driver Education course, the teen road test requirements will apply.

What do I need to bring to my road test?
Please arrive 10–15 minutes early with all required documents. For most applicants, this includes:
- Learner license or restricted driver license
- Driver education completion certificate (DE-964 or ADE-1317, if required by age)
- Impact Texas Drivers certificate (ITTD or ITAD, dated within the last 90 days)
- 30-hour parent/guardian driving log (for teens, if applicable)
- Verification of Enrollment (VOE) for teen drivers, if required
- Parent or legal guardian for minors to sign DPS paperwork

What are the requirements if I use my own vehicle for the test?
Your car must be in safe, legal working condition with:
- Current Texas inspection and registration
- Valid insurance
- Working headlights, brake lights, turn signals, horn, brakes, and seat belts
If the vehicle does not pass the safety check, the test cannot be administered. - License plates located at the front and back of the vehicle.

Can I use a Memorial Driving School vehicle for my test?
Yes. For an additional fee, you may use one of our vehicles, based on availability. This option helps reduce test anxiety and ensures all vehicle requirements are met.

What happens when I arrive for the test?
You’ll check in, and we’ll review your permit/license and applicable certificates. Your examiner will then explain the testing process. A detailed explanation of your results will be provided at the end of your road test.

What does the driving portion of the test include?
Our examiners follow an official DPS testing route and grading standards. You may be evaluated on:
- Turning, lane changes, and proper signaling
- Obeying stop signs and traffic lights
- Speed control and following distance
- Backing and parking maneuvers
- Overall awareness and safe driving habits

How will I receive my results?
Immediately after the test, your examiner will review your score sheet and discuss any errors. If you pass, you’ll receive the official documentation needed to complete your license process at DPS.
