Texas Drivers License: A Step-by-Step Guide

Getting your driver’s license in Texas is an exciting milestone—but the process can feel overwhelming if you’re not sure where to start. Whether you’re a teen driver or an adult getting licensed for the first time, this step-by-step guide will walk you through everything you need to know.

Step 1: Determine Your Eligibility

Before you begin, it’s important to understand the requirements based on your age.

  • Teens (under 18): Must complete a state-approved driver education course and follow the Graduated Driver License (GDL) program.
  • Adults (18–24): Required to complete a 6-hour adult driver education course.
  • Adults (25+): Not required to take a course, but it is highly recommended for preparation and confidence.

Step 2: Complete Driver Education

Driver education is the foundation of becoming a safe and confident driver.

For teens, this typically includes:

  • Classroom instruction (learning traffic laws and safety rules)
  • Behind-the-wheel training with a certified instructor
  • Practice hours logged with a parent or guardian

For adults, the course is shorter but still covers essential driving laws, road signs, and safe driving practices.

Completing a driver education program also allows you to take the written knowledge test through your driving school, saving time at the DPS.

Step 3: Get Your Learner License (Permit)

Once you’ve completed the required portion of driver education, you can apply for your learner license.

You’ll need to bring:

  • Proof of identity and residency
  • Social Security number
  • Driver education certificate
  • Verification of Enrollment (VOE) for teens
  • A parent or guardian (for applicants under 18)

At this stage, you’ll take a vision exam and may take the written test if it hasn’t already been completed through your course.

With your learner license, you can begin practicing driving with a licensed adult in the passenger seat.

Step 4: Complete Practice Driving Hours

Practice is key to building confidence and skill behind the wheel.

Teens are required to complete:

  • 30 hours of supervised driving, including at least 10 hours at night

Adults are encouraged to practice as much as possible, especially in different conditions like highways, intersections, and parking situations.

Many students also choose to take additional driving lessons with a professional instructor to refine their skills and prepare for the road test.

Step 5: Complete the Impact Texas Drivers Program

Before taking your driving test, you must complete the Impact Texas Drivers (ITD) program.

This free, state-required course focuses on:

  • The dangers of distracted driving
  • Real-life consequences of unsafe driving behavior

Your ITD certificate must be completed within 90 days of your driving test.

Step 6: Schedule and Take Your Driving Test

The final step is passing your road test.

During the test, you’ll be evaluated on:

  • Vehicle control and safety
  • Obeying traffic signs and signals
  • Proper turns, lane changes, and stopping
  • Awareness of surroundings

You can take your driving test at a DPS office or through an approved third-party driving school, which often offers more flexible scheduling and a less stressful experience.

Be sure to bring:

  • Your learner license
  • Driver education certificate (if applicable)
  • ITD certificate
  • A safe, registered, and insured vehicle

Step 7: Receive Your Driver’s License

Once you pass your driving test, you’ll receive your temporary license, with your official license arriving by mail shortly after.

For teens, you’ll move into the provisional license phase, which includes some driving restrictions. Adults will receive a full, unrestricted license.
